CURTIS BRACHER

Curtis Bracher is a West Coast artist and an Art Foundations/Digital Instructor at various colleges in San Diego, CA. He received his Master of Fine Arts Degree in Painting/New Media from Pratt Institute in New York and a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from San Diego State University. As a practicing artist for over twenty years, his visual media interests are wide ranging - video and sound projection, interactive experience, mass culture imagery as epistemological, experiential sculpture, and the more engaged aspects of drawing. Throughout his educational career, he has lectured widely, taught, directed the Museum Art School at SDMA, has worked with various community art organizations, and, currently, he is a participant in the experimental art project - San Diego Space 4 Art. The most recent of his exhibitions included a video projection at the San Diego International Airport. His last group show, "Felicita" at Ship in the Woods in San Diego, included interactive explorations with imagery and sound. Born February 1, 1964, he had lived in New York (and Colorado) for over 12 years before moving back to Southern California in 2008. He has a young daughter that destroys his studio more than he does.

Caity Fares

Caity Fares is a visual artist and educator living in San Diego, California. She uses digital and analog cameras to create traditional portraits and builds handmade cameras out of discarded materials to make experimental landscapes. Caity has exhibited work in the states and abroad, including at SOMArts, the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, the Szkéné Theatre in Budapest, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and the San Diego Art Institute: Museum of the Living Artist. Her photos have been published in Blur Magazine, Coast Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and F­Stop Magazine.

She was recently awarded a residency and grant from the Fljótstunga Travel Farm in Iceland where she created landscape photographs that explore the contemporary state of a one thousand year old lava field. Caity received her BA in Art from the University of California, Santa Cruz and completed her MFA in Photography at the San Francisco Art Institute. She now freelance shoots for the New York Times and works as adjunct faculty at San Diego City College, the Art Institute of California, San Diego, and UC San Diego Extension.

JENNIFER DE POYEN

Jennifer de Poyen is a visual artist, writer, and executive director of Space 4 Art. She earned a B.A. at McGill University and an M.A. at Stanford University before embarking on an award-winning career as a journalist. She was a mid-career fellow at Columbia University, where she studied painting and drawing with Archie Rand, legendary teacher and frequent collaborator of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet John Ashbery. In addition to making art and running Space 4 Art, Jennifer writes fiction and teaches Ashtanga Vinyasa yoga.

MATT DUNN

Matt graduated from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in 2005 with a focus in painting and sculpture. From 2003 to 2010 he fabricated sculpture and installed exhibitions with the studio of a NYC-based video artist, and from 2007 to 2010 helped run now-defunct artists’ nonprofit The Space, and its subsidiary Fardom Gallery, in Long Island City, Queens.

Matt moved to San Diego in 2010. From 2011 to 2015 he was a preparator and fabricator at The New Children’s Museum.

Bob Leathers

Bob Leathers is a textile artist and international architect specializing in collaboratively designed and realized "community builds." Along with fellow artists Cheryl Nickel and Chris Warr,  he is a founder of Space 4 Art. Current projects include designing Space 4 Art's future home on Market Street in Sherman Heights and Terra Infirma, a collaborative, multi-media art project about environmental devastation and regeneration.

MAY-LING MARTINEZ

May-ling Martinez was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and currently lives and works in San Diego, California. She holds an MFA degree from San Diego State University (2007) and BA in Communications and Visual Arts from San Juan’s Sacred Heart University (1996).

She has exhibited in numerous venues, including the California Center for the Arts, the La Jolla Athenaeum of Music and Arts Library, William D. Cannon Art Gallery Biennial, Everett Gee Jackson Gallery/SDSU, The Art Produce Gallery, UCSD, Galería José Pepin Méndez, San Juan, PR, and Lugar del Nopal, Tijuana, MX, among others. May-ling Martinez was the recipient of the 2007-2008 San Diego Art Prize in the Emerging Artist category. And in the “Here Not There” exhibition at the MCASD.

Nick Lesley

Nick Lesley is a musician and media artist based in San Diego. He received a BA in Media Arts from UCSD, and MFA in Performance and Interactive Media Arts from Brooklyn College. Many of Nick’s works and collaborations incorporate interactive sound or video, performance, and finished media. As a musician, Nick primarily plays improvised music on drums and interactive electronics, combining percussion with analog and digital signal processing. Nick is the Executive Director of SPACE TIME, an organization dedicated to the presentation of time-based artworks in San Diego.

Angel Mannion

Angel Mannion spends his time both onstage and behind-the-scenes working on community music projects. After studying music at San Diego State University, Angel founded professional choir Folklore Guild to record music for video game, television, and film soundtracks. Folklore Guild can recently be heard on "Chef's Table" (Netflix) and "Lamplight City" (Grundislav Games).

As the Interactive Media and Project Manager for San Diego Opera, Angel documents the rehearsal process of each production for marketing efforts and is in charge of "OPERA HACK": a project aimed to discover new ways for technology such as augmented reality, 3D printing, and sound design to be used in the context of producing and presenting opera (funded by Opera America, Sponsored by Microsoft).

Angel is also a freelance writer and consultant for the San Diego Symphony and assisted Dr. Ruben Valenzuela as the Co-Director of WILLAN WEST 2018: a yearlong celebration of the choral music of Canadian composer, Healey Willan.

As a baritone and guest conductor, Angel frequently performs with professional choirs, symphonies, recording studios, and churches in San Diego and Los Angeles. Professional experience includes appearances with: San Diego Opera, San Diego Symphony, SACRA/PROFANA, Bach Collegium San Diego, San Diego Pro Arte Voices, True Concord Voices and Orchestra, and Saint Paul's Episcopal Cathedral.

Outside of music; Angel is an active rock climber, photographer, and father of an American Dingo named Vixen.

FRANKIE MELENDEZ

Frankie Melendez is an artist and musician known mostly for psychedelic noise ritual band, RIVERVERB, as well as psychedelic afro-punk outfit, TAR HALOS. He enjoys making rock posters and anything that contributes to music projects that inspire him. He was taught abstract expressionism at an early age by his late father, Charles Melendez. Spiritualist love-dealin' Leo with a big heart and generous with his time and attention, Frankie seeks a depth of awareness that comes with a heavy toll. Hanging out in the Valley of the Gods isn't free. Duality will keep you waiting in line. The cosmic panhandler is just looking to serve the Divine Host and be there for his brothers and sisters in any way he's needed. His best friend is his dog, Kevin. He's a journeyman carpenter and enjoys his career in custom woodwork, cabinetry, and especially loves to remodel homes and contribute to people's quality of life by helping them to turn their living space into a sanctuary with love and attention to detail. He's pretty easy to find if you want to look him up.

Gilbert Neri

Gilbert Neri is a multimedia artist whose creative work ranges from book illustration, printmaking, mural work, sculpture to multimedia installation. Although his artwork takes many forms, common themes such as those of passage, migration and the links between place and notions of home.

His work has been exhibited throughout California and Seattle Washington. While living in Seattle he helped to create an artist collective “Noodleworks” that exhibited emerging artists from the region as well as nationally. He was also one of three founding organizers of “Art Detour” Seattle, a City-wide open studio event that spanned three days and included over 150 participating artists. His experience includes digital imaging and publishing as well as digital illustration, book design and print color management.

CHERYL NICKEL

An artist with a Master’s Degree in landscape architecture from Cornell University.  She has exhibited installation and sculptural work in various media at Cornell University Art Galleries. Johnson Art Museum, Ithaca, New York, Loma Linda University, Riverside, CA. Group shows include: Grove Gallery UCSD, Palomar College, Mira Mesa College, and Escondido Center for the Arts, Sushi Performance and Visual Art Center, La Sierra University Brandstadter Gallery, and “Allied Craftsmen Today” at Mingei Museum. Public projects/ Environmental works include: environmental sculptures for the Ithaca Arts Festival; design/build arts and landscape projects in parks and schools in 5 states, including Hoover High School, San Diego. Grants and awards have included four New York State Council on the Arts Grants for art, design and planning; Cornell University Council for the Creative and Performing Arts; San Diego State Foundation/ Price Charities, and Lowe’s Community Grant. Current work includes a major environmental piece under construction, “Path of the Just” at La Sierra University in Riverside, CA. that honors world leaders including Desmond Tutu and Mother Theresa. She is a member of Allied Craftsmen, and a Board Member of Synergy Arts Foundation.

Jonathan Piper

Jonathan Piper is an experimental tubist, jug blower, and scholar based in San Diego.  His work as a musician explores themes of failure, exhaustion, ecstasy, and mediation through the use of extended techniques, improvisation, and live electronics. Jonathan's dissertation, Locating Experiential Richness in Doom Metal, considers the physical and emotional sensations in slow, heavy music. Jonathan earned his BA in Music Performance at UCLA and MA and PhD in Critical Studies/Experimental Practices at UCSD.

JEREMY SICILE-KIRA

San Diego-based intuitive artist Jeremy Sicile-Kira is a synesthete – he sees emotion in color. In 2012, Jeremy began to paint in real life the colorful abstract portraits that he was painting in his dreams. In 2016 his first curated solo art show was covered by national and local media, resulting in a sold-out show and many private commissions. Awards include: 2016 ART San Diego Spotlight Artist; RMG’s 2016 Platform Artist of the Year, Finalist.

Ryan Vincente

Ryan Vicente is a printmaker from Northern California. He studied fine art printmaking at Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Ryan is best known for his work with "re-imagined architecture", a mash-up of buildings and objects found in the cities and towns that he has lived or visited. A letterpress printer for DeFrance Printing in the day, owner of Print By Layer in the evening; he is often found pulling a squeegee for screenprints, carving tedious little lines into linoleum, or buried under piles of paper creating handmade artist books.

Ariana Warren began her musical career in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Warren earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Contemporary Music Performance from the University of California, San Diego and Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the Peabody Conservatory. Dr. Warren has played around the world, and currently performs in San Diego with Joe Garrison and the Night People, San Diego City Ballet Orchestra, A Hundred Ghosts, Opera Neo, and Sugarbird.

Chris Warren creates interactive sonic software that reimagines the way we hear the world around us. His transformative installations have been featured at the Museum of Making Music, the Fleet Science Center, and the Havana Biennial. Dr. Warren teaches music composition at San Diego State University and the University of San Diego.

ELIZABETH WASHBURN

Born and raised in the Midwest, Elizabeth has lived in San Diego since 2000. Previously, her professional and educational pursuits led her to living in Cairo, Egypt, New York, and San Francisco.

She currently exhibits her work in galleries and museums locally and nationally. Primarily, she is a narrative painter whose work reflects her personal history, as well as relating the stories of exceptional people she meets while
teaching.

In addition to teaching art for over 15 years, Elizabeth also founded an expressive arts program called Combat Arts San Diego where she provides art classes, cultural tours, mentoring, public art projects, and art exhibitions for combat veterans returning home from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Laguna College of Art and Design in Laguna Beach, CA and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA.

Derek Weiler

Derek Weiler is a German/American visual artist and art historian. He studied painting at the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart, Germany, and received his MFA from Hunter College in New York City. He holds a PhD in art history from the Institute of Fine Arts, NYU. Derek’s early work was featured in the historic exhibitions "Stonewall 25" at White Columns, New York, and "Faggots – A Communiqué From North America" at Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas, Buenos Aires. He was included in the Gramercy Art Fair and has shown in group and solo exhibitions in New York, Cologne, Berlin, and Brussels. In 1999, he was an artist in residence at Yaddo and the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Grant. Most recently, Derek held the position of Chester Dale Fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and taught at Parsons School of Design in New York. He is currently working on a series of monotypes at San Diego Space4Art.
