October 2023 Open Studios

  • Space 4 Art Inc. 340 16th Street San Diego, CA, 92101 United States (map)

Join us on October 28 from 7:00-9:30 pm for our next Open Studios. Entry is always free. With Halloween on the horizon, guests are encouraged to let their freak flag fly! Resident musicians Ariana Warren and Chris Warren, as part of OMNIHARMONIUM, will be performing the live score to the classic Halloween radio drama War of the Worlds.

In honor of Dia de los Muertos, longtime resident musician Felix Diaz is leading our efforts to include some Day of the Dead celebrations and practices, too.

  • The Diaz Trio will perform a series of SONES, a traditional musical form originating from various regions in Mexico and used for events like Dia de los Muertos. During this lively, rhythmic, and danceable music, the audience is invited and encouraged to participate, thus creating a celebratory atmosphere.

  • We’ll also have an ofrenda (altar) to honor both loved ones we’ve lost from our own S4A community and pioneering Mexican surrealist women artists. Guests are also welcome to bring a photo or memory of their own loved ones to share.

  • Tamales, Pan de Muerto (sweet bread), and Café de Olla (spiced coffee) will be available for purchase, along with our usual fare of snacks and beverages.

The performance schedule is:

  • 7:15-7:45 pm Jonathan Piper (Experimental Tuba)

  • 8:00-8:40 pm Diaz Trio (Sones)

  • 8:45-9:15 pm OMNIHARMONIUM (War of the Worlds)

Don’t forget to check back closer to the actual event date for tweaks to the performance schedule.

As always, most of our artist studios will be open for guests to wander through. This is always a casual event, in which questions and discussions with different artists are encouraged, if you are so moved. Some artists also have work for sale, so don’t be afraid to ask if something sparks your interest!
